When can my pet start rehab?

Rehabilitation can begin as early as possible—whether it's before surgery (prehabilitation) or after.
During the early stages of healing, we offer targeted treatments to support pain relief, promote tissue repair,
and set the foundation for a smoother, more successful recovery.

What if my dog doesn’t like water but would benefit from hydrotherapy / aqua treadmill?

This is a common concern for many pet owners, and most are pleasantly surprised by how well their pets cope during their session. We take a gentle, positive approach, allowing your pet to become familiar with the water gradually. The water rises slowly and calmly, which most pets tolerate very well.

With tasty treats, gentle encouragement, and a calm environment, many pets adapt faster than expected. While some may still feel a little unsure at first, we always work closely with your pet to ensure they’re comfortable and coping throughout the session.

Why do I need a vet referral?

As each case is unique, we require medical or surgical history from your veterinarian to help us determine the proper course of therapy. We also require the referral to make sure that there are no other conditions developing that are similar but have different consequences. Your vet can send your pet’s referral and history direct to us or they can fill out the referral form through the link below or through the I’m a Vet tab at the top.

Do I need to bring anything to the first session?

A towel for your car if your pet is having an underwater treadmill session. We will supply everything else, including a wash down after their underwater treadmill session. Though we supply our amazing homemade treats, if your pet has special dietary requirements we highly suggest bringing along their food/treats for motivation and reward. Any diagnostic test results and reports will be great too. These can include xrays, blood results, discharge notes, MRI reports etc.
Any medications and supplements given will be beneficial too.

What happens at the first visit?

The initial assessment will run for approximately 1 hour. During the Initial Assessment, Carmel will assess your pet, review your pet’s history, provide a home exercise program and discuss a treatment plan with frequency of visits required.

If time permits, your pet will also have any relevant treatment that will be most beneficial. These can include Therapeutic Ultrasound, Phototherapy, PEMF, massage, NMES or stabilising/strengthening exercises. She will also likely do a small underwater treadmill session, depending on the individual pet and their requirements.
For more information about the treatments available click the link to the left.

What happens when my pet first has underwater treadmill?

At your pet’s first few hydrotherapy sessions, you can expect that they will only have a short session, with rest breaks in between. If your pet is not used to water, their first session may be uncertain until they become accustomed to the routine. Remaining cheerful and encouraging will help to stop them becoming anxious. Walking in water is tiring work, so it is important not to overdo the exercise initially.

How often does my pet need treatment?

Each pet’s needs are different and each case is different. During the initial assessment, Carmel will assess your pet, review your pet’s history, provide a home exercise program and discuss a treatment plan with frequency of visits required. Doing the exercises prescribed diligently could reduce the frequency of the visits. After each session, our team will chat with you about how they feel your pets therapy is progressing and will work out visit frequency, moving forward. Ultimately, it will also depend on your availability, time for performing exercises at home, pet’s medical needs, finances, and your established goals.

Am I allowed to stay during my pet’s visit?

We actually prefer that you stay during your pet’s visit to help keep them comforted and happy. You will be able to see their progress and we can ask you any further questions as they come up. Plus having extra hands to feed treats is always great!

Can I claim rehabilitation with my Pet Insurance?

You will need to check with your insurance company if they will cover for rehabilitation, it usually depends on your policy you have.
To claim, please send through your completed from to info@activepetrehab.com and one of the team will complete it as soon as we can. More pet insurance companies are covering rehabilitation services and hydrotherapy, likely understanding the importance or rehabilitation in a patients recovery.

Do you do rehabilitation on cats?

Yes, we do! During the initial assessment we create a tailored rehabilitation program for your cat. Not usually with aqua treadmill, but certainly plenty of fun things for you to do with them at home too.

What is the benefit of Underwater Treadmill over Swimming?

  • Water height can be adjusted to the correct level for maximum benefit

  • The speed can be controlled

  • Normal walking pattern allowing gait re-education, the use of each limb individually (rather than a paddling motion) and more controlled movements

  • Even walking surface, no risk of injury from uneven surfaces below the waterline

  • Heated water, providing relaxation and mild analgesia

  • Less intimidating for dogs that are fearful of water

  • Gentle and low impact on joints

  • Safe for dogs with mild heart conditions

  • Good for patients who are unfit or weak

  • Patients can be easily assisted when required

Does my pet qualify for Super Paws?

For your pet to qualify for Super Paws they must be:

  • Have had an initial assessment with Carmel

  • Be walking unassisted in the underwater treadmill
(This can take a few sessions)

  • Does not require any intensive treatments such as Ultrasound, NMES, or progressive exercise following joint or spinal surgery.
